ELIMINATING A SUNKEN DRIVEWAY APPROACH BEFORE IT BECAME A BIGGER PROBLEM
One of the most common places for concrete settlement to occur is right in front of the garage.
At this Geneva home, the driveway approach had gradually settled over time, creating a noticeable gap beneath the garage door area and an uneven transition between concrete sections.
While the driveway was still usable, the homeowner knew the problem was getting worse and wanted to address it before additional cracking, drainage issues, or more extensive settlement occurred.
Rather than waiting until replacement became necessary, they chose to correct the issue while the concrete was still in good overall condition.

The Challenge
The primary concern was settlement along the driveway approach directly in front of the garage.
Over time, the homeowner noticed:
- A growing gap beneath the garage approach
- Uneven concrete near the garage doors
- Signs of settlement developing across the slab
- Water collecting in low areas after rainfall
- Existing cracks beginning to widen
Like many driveway settlement issues, the problem wasn’t the concrete itself.
The real issue was occurring underneath the slab.
Years of soil movement and moisture infiltration had allowed portions of the supporting soil to settle, creating voids beneath the concrete.
As support diminished, sections of the driveway began dropping out of position.
The homeowner wanted to:
- Lift the settled concrete
- Restore a smoother transition into the garage
- Stabilize the slab from below
- Help prevent additional movement
- Avoid the cost and disruption of replacement
The Raise-Rite Solution
After inspecting the driveway, our team recommended polyurethane concrete lifting combined with crack and joint sealing.
This approach allowed us to:
- Lift the settled driveway approach
- Fill voids beneath the slab
- Stabilize the supporting soil
- Improve the transition at the garage entrance
- Seal existing cracks to help reduce future water intrusion
By addressing both the settlement and the exposed crack, we were able to improve both performance and appearance.
Most importantly, we preserved the existing driveway instead of replacing it.
The Fix (3-Step Process)

Step 1: Drill
Small access holes were strategically drilled into the affected driveway sections.

Step 2: Pump
High-density polyurethane foam was injected beneath the slab. As the foam expanded, it filled voids and carefully lifted the settled concrete back toward its original position.

Step 3: Patch & Seal
Once the driveway was stabilized, the access holes were patched and the existing crack was professionally sealed to help limit future moisture infiltration.
The Results
The completed repair restored both function and appearance.
The driveway approach is now:
- Better aligned with the garage entrance
- Properly supported from below
- Stabilized against future settlement
- Less vulnerable to water intrusion
- Improved in overall appearance
The homeowner now has confidence knowing the issue was addressed before it turned into a much larger repair.
Instead of replacing large sections of concrete, they were able to restore and protect the driveway they already had.
WHY DRIVEWAY APPROACHES SETTLE IN GENEVA, IL
Driveway approaches often settle faster than other sections of concrete because they experience constant vehicle traffic and are located near the foundation of the home.
Common causes include:
- Soil erosion beneath the slab
- Water infiltration through joints and cracks
- Freeze-thaw cycles during Illinois winters
- Natural soil compaction
- Long-term settlement around foundations and garages
As support beneath the slab weakens, concrete begins to sink, crack, and separate.
Concrete lifting restores support beneath the driveway while helping prevent further movement.
